“We want the voice of the inhabitants of Donbass to be heard in Austria”
Activist from Austria Wilhelm Langthaler talks about the Donbass.
In general, the Austrian media are extremely biased towards Russia, as well as to those whom they call «Donbass separatists.» In our country, there is no major media outlet that contradicts Western narrative. Initially, in 2014, the resistance movement in the Donbass and the demand for peace with Russia received wide support. There was even a small political movement in our country. But then a political and media counterattack followed, cementing negative narrative. And, unfortunately, they were very successful. But still there is a significant part of the population that is against the anti-Russian campaign. However, it is very difficult to openly confront the official position. In a certain sense we are the only ones voicing this.
We want to convey information that Austria as a nation is constitutionally neutral, and we want to maintain this. This is the result of the victory over German fascism achieved by Soviet Russia. We want peace and friendship with Russia, and we believe that this is the position of the majority, which opposes our elites blindly following the United States, NATO and the EU, especially with regard to Donbass. We want the voice of the inhabitants of Donbass to be heard in Austria, so we want to establish friendly relations. Since we cannot represent our government, we must do this at the popular level.
The decision of the Russian Federation to issue passports to residents of Donbass is an absolute necessity and is highly appreciated by us in order to normalize people’s lives.
